A gift idea and my apologies for not posting earlier

Christmas is about connecting with loved one. Well that is one way to put it and my own interpretation.
One does not need to go the expensive consumer route to achieve that.
I remember someone suggesting a home -made pouch with redeemable coupons that could be traded at the gift bearer's convenience.
For a couple, it could be a massage, an hour of undivided time, a shared sensual bubble bath, a night out in private, a film with popcorn or not, a hike in the woods or anywhere private.
It allows the person who receives the gift to redeem it at his or her discretion.
Our lives are at times crazy-busy and we lose track of one another and experience communication breakdowns. It is a heartful way to reconnect.

It is also a very good idea to offer one to a child with private time or time with friends at the sport events movies, zoo , museum, or on hikes or private meals or a "special conversation time" or even a monetary gift or lessons.
Children can also make them with offers for walking the dog, quiet time, cleaning out the room without a fuss etc. age appropriate in task and time.

The pouch can be extensively decorated in your own style.
The basic message is that you care and are willing to give your time in order to reconnect.
The interesting part is the the gift recipient gets to choose when to redeem .

It can be done on birthdays too, on Valentine's Day, and one can alternate.
Just an idea.

Any other nifty gift ideas?

  • Most people I know have no idea what to do other than go buy something/anything because they are "supposed" to. This is a socialized behavior pattern that is deeply ingrained Breaking these patterns are difficult...but as people get more and more broke I'm thinking this will change... It will have to.

I make warm winter polarfleece hats for people mostly, or a microfleece base layer, or a fleecy throw for curling up under. And sometimes I send out what you suggested; coupons or gift certificates for massages or hot springs dips or chiro adjustments etc. I haven't been a
christmas "shopper" in a long time...
  • It's a great idea, Eniad. As children my sisters and I gave coupon gifts to our parents. Partly because we didn't have money then, but also because it was a more meaningful gift to our parents. They appreciated them a lot. The pouch idea makes it more special. We just hand wrote ours, decorated with colored pencils or crayons, and put them in an envelope. This is a good solution, too, for any of you that haven't yet chosen a gift for your loved ones that you'll see tomorrow. You can still do this tonight, maybe not the pouch part, but certainly the coupons. Think of things you can do for your loved ones you'll see on Christmas.
    • As far as I am concerned, buying gifts on command like that is for children,- because they are more hooked into what "the other kids" do or have..
I have just last year finally managed to get my family to understand that I REALLY do not want any gifts, and they will only ever get edibles from me.
I feel really good about this., and it is a relief not to have more things,- especially if they are things I didnt really want..

-but I did get things for my kids, especially since my one daughter has her birthday on the 25th. But if I had my way, I'd only make things for them..

It always astonishes me how conditioned people are to the commercialism,..- we live in a predominately muslim neighborhood, and still the kids got gifts, just 'because'

and when I lived in Japan, people said Merry Christmas to each other, rushed home from a perfectly normal working day to eat christmas dinner (japanese style, including strawberry sponge cake) and gave each other a gift.. not that they knew what they were celebrating neither..- despite the traditional big 3-day shinto new years celebration coming up..

      humans are very conditonnable creatures..
