Do you know of any stories on ethical consumerism that should be shared? Companies that are hurting the public and getting away with it? Someone who stood up to the school district and got hormone-free milk for the school??
I'm setting off on a cross country adventure to make a documentary on the issues most of the media ignores... sustainability, alternative energy, intentional communities, social and grassroots movements... and I am searching for stories that need to be told, businesses that should be supported and information that should be shared.
I'll be passing through at least thirty states in at least two months of travel. I have a general route but open to detours as they present themselves.
Please drop me a line!
Blessings!

Re: Looking for subjects for documentary...
Thu, July 24, 2008 - 8:29 AMYou mention hormone free milk - that's a good one. And you may want to tackle the issue about pasteurization too.
Sodas and other high sugar snacks at schools instead of water, juice and other more healthy options.
Here's an idea on the side, challenge the industrial hemp issue. we can make paper, clothes, fuel and all kinds of products right here in the US if farmers were allowed to crow hemp - which of course contains no THC. This is an embarrassment to the US - our US Constitution was written on hemp paper. All school books and gov't books, work should be using hemp paper. -

Thu, July 24, 2008 - 10:23 AMI'm with you on this one. One of the businesses I am highlighting in my first chapter of the documentary is the Hempest here in Bellingham, a clothing store with natural fibers non-sweatshop fair trade goods... and discussing the hemp issue. -

Thu, July 24, 2008 - 7:13 PMI would want to highlight some businesses that are being proactive with "green building." Businesses and people that are utilizing solar and wind power and are conscientious about conservation and environmental issues like pollution. -

Re: Looking for subjects for documentary...
Fri, October 3, 2008 - 10:04 AMI work for The Cornucopia Institute - you should check us out (www.cornucopia.org). Our mission is to be a watchdog for the organic label and to promote economic justice for family-scale farming. We do public education, research, and attack the big guys - see the reports on our site we've written on Walmart, infant formula, and the dairy industry.
Our current project, going to court over now, is with the USDA, who a year ago mandated that raw almonds be pasteurized without changing the label as raw - baaad news.
Most of our work, over the past four years, in defense of all the small guys has been done by our two codirectors, Mark Kastel and Will Fantle.
We are based out of Cornucopia, WI - but Will lives in Eau Claire, WI (as do I) and Mark lives in LaFarge, WI (near LaCrosse).
Good luck - this is awesome!

Visit the creative re-use depot in Oakland, or look at Urban Ore. Check out our local "get organic food into poor communities" organization, Spiral Gardens, on Sacramento and Oregon st.
There is SO much to see here. -

Re: Looking for subjects for documentary...
Sat, November 8, 2008 - 10:31 AMMy yard became a legal test case in Chattanooga for ecolandscaping after I was hauled into court for the third time for trying to replace my half acre of kudzu with native plants, and have a sustainable, no-mow yard. There was actually quite a bit of press for a while after the inspectors threatened to condemn my beautiful acre of savannah and forest and take my property for not installing turfgrass on this impossibly steep and rocky ridge. The judge, finding out I had the state extension agent in court with me, decided to dismiss the case instead. She formed a taskforce to review the city landscaping ordinances. The city sent all sorts of experts in to either check my knowledge of natives and landscaping devices, or look for flaws in my acre-project. Learn more at myspace.com/masterkudzugardeners. Lana
