carbon offsets

what do people think about carbon offsets? I feel a little dubious about them. It seems to me a way to charge more to people (like a guilt tax). I think businesses that cause the pollution should be responsible for donating a portion of their profits to offsets and that consumers shouldn't be expected to buy them.

I like the theory, but we should be making bigger changes. Some of the ideas coming around now would have been fine 20 years ago, but we are coming into crunch time and we need to step up. I'm thinking the big companies should do more than offset.
I'm actually happy the housing market is slowing down. In my town, there was a huge new housing boom when older homes sat empty.
I also think it's stupid that big companies can buy carbon credits from other companies and continue not making any real changes.
Feels like buying a hybrid vehicle when electric cars were available! (Sorry, just saw "Who Killed The Electric Car" and it really pissed me off :))

There are certain programs that would get much needed funding through carbon offsets. Things like paying indigenous farmers in rainforest countries to not cut down more forest and to take care of the existing rainforest would be a good carbon offset. If say company 'x' produces 80,000 tons of carbon dioxide and pays 200 Amazonian farmers to keep their land in rainforest, thereby sucking up and keeping 100,000 tons of cabon dioxide, that would be a good deal. It also would pay for things like biochar (www.biochar.org) so that these same small farmers can have the capital funds for better practices and the needed help to get it going.

Its just a matter of how they are charged and where they go. Agreed though that all these companies need to take responsibility for their carbon emissions, but charging them for it now will make them want to cut carbon emissions (and thereby increase their bottom line) before too long. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that the expense of waste on the budget should be addressed.

That's a pretty funny video - I'm not quite sure if its the same as the carbon credit thing though. Have you heard of Fred Krupp's new book called, "Earth: The Sequel". Its well worth the money and the read, because he goes through all of the renewable energy companies and how a cap-and-trade system would work and move the market into gear as far as sorting out global warming....
