How to spend that tax refund?

This question came up on the blog of a Tribe friend, and I thought it might make for good discussion here.

My intention is to give mine away. I mean the "extra" money that GWB is supposedly going to "refund" to us. Of course there are lots of consumer goods I want, but I am also doing okay (not great, but okay) financially, and I'm mad at Bush for this because I think it's a cheap publicity stunt. Despite my modest means, I do have a budget for philanthropy - if that word can be applied to such small gift amounts. And because I've always worked for nonprofits (hence the modest means!) I'm sensitive to the needs of organizations trying to do right. There are so many areas that could use our support: environment, health, arts, etc.

I might buy a crash mat for aerial practice. A good crash mat is kind of expensive but is necessary if I'm going to practice aerial arts at home. My boyfriend has recently altered one of our rooms that has a high ceiling, and we are going to rig a point for my aerial tissue. It will be great to practice at home. I can practice to my music without bothering the other students at the circus school, and more of my friends will get to see my art. Maybe I will even teach some beginning moves to interested friends, but for that I will certainly need that crash mat in case any of us fall while practicing in the air.

Environmental Defense has a campaign going right now to get the needed cash to push global warming legistlation through this year before Congress' summer break. That would be a worthy philanthropic cause, I think. As for my $300, I'm saving it so that by the end of the year I can open up a money market account (or some other good investment) in alternative energy. That's where the money should be invested (ethically) and where the world will need to be heading quick so it is good to get in this year before it starts going like mad...
